An Elman
Style Induction by Christopher J Harrison |
The first time that this induction is used on a client there
is some pre-talk required.
This discussion with the client basically revolves round the
suggestion of ……………..……. ‘holding a thought makes all things
possible’. So the therapist first demonstrates that if you
hold the thought that you can make your arm……………………..’the
most tense it could possibly be’……..then it will stay like
that for as long as you hold that thought.
Then it is demonstrated that it must also follow that it is
possible to make your arm …….. …….…………... ‘the most relaxed
that it can possibly be’.
It is then explained, (and demonstrated), that the eyes are
the easiest muscles in the body to relax and if you hold the
thought that they are so relaxed that if you try to open
them …………… ‘they just won’t open’……………….. until you change
the thought to allow them to open, then they will stay tight
shut.
The following instructions are then given to the client………
• Take a long deep breath…..hold it for a moment… and as you
exhale this breath allow your eyes to close, (whilst at the
same time the therapist brings their hand down from above
the client’s eyes to below their chin). Note: If the client
closes their eyes before you tell them to; start again
because they must follow your instructions and not lead.
• Now relax the muscles around your eyes to the point that
they will not work and pretend that you can’t open them;
even though you know full well that you can open them if you
wanted to. As long as you keep on pretending that they are
so relaxed that they won’t open …and you hold that
thought…..then they won’t open…
• And now test them to make sure that they won’t open. Note:
If they don’t open…well done. If they do open……..OK you’ve
proved that you are in charge and can open your eyes; now
prove that you are in charge and can not open your eyes. If
they don’t test their eyes, repeat……..remember they must
follow your instructions.
• The client is now instructed to let the relaxation that
they now have in their eyes to flow from head to toe (in
stages).
• There then follows a few rounds of fractionation where the
client is instructed to open their eyes….take a deep breath
and close them on the out breath,… with the instruction that
they allow their relaxation to double when the eyes close.
At the same time you should bring your hand down from above
their eyes to below the clients chin, as before.
• The therapist then tells the client that they are going to
lift their arm a few inches and then let it drop…. and when
it plops back down it will double their relaxation. This
actually also checks that they are fully relaxed and it must
be emphasised that the client does not assist in the hand
lifting.
• It is now explained to the client that they have achieved
wonderful physical relaxation…but the secret to true
relaxation is to also obtain mental relaxation …….. and this
is achieved by counting backwards from 100…….. They are
instructed to do this out loud…..slowly….and with each
number they say…. they are to double their mental
relaxation…..and after each number they say they are to
shrink the numbers….. and relax them out of their mind…..and
within just a few numbers they will have all disappeared.
Note: Some repetitive dialogue needs to be spent on this
area to convince the client this is possible if they hold
the thought that they can do this …it will happen if they
……………….. ‘ will the numbers away and make it happen.’
• At this final stage there is always a check by asking the
client…. ………..………………………‘are they all gone’.
• In practice, Elman states that he mainly got the numbers
to disappear by the time the client has reached 98……I
personally average around 94/96. Occasionally he had a
client where the numbers did not completely disappear even
though he could tell from the clients voice and demeanour
that they were going deeper and deeper…and so he would then
just click his fingers and say ………………………. ‘OK, now let go
completely’….. Also, he sometimes would vary the above by
getting the client to spell their name and………….. ‘relax the
letters out of their mind’….. before the spelling was
complete.
• If he wished to deepen the hypnotic state he would use up
to three escalators going down to basement levels A, B, and
C. He would use this method whilst of course adding relevant
deepening dialogue on the way down and he would use basement
level C…… ‘as the very basement of relaxation’.
So, in summary…
• Pre-talk if required
• Obtain eye closure.
• Test eyes.
• Relaxation to flow through whole body.
• A few rounds of fractionation.
• Arm test for physical relaxation.
• Counting backwards from 100 to obtain mental relaxation.
Deepen as necessary with escalators A,B and C.
Why not give the Elman style a try…..it’s good fun to try
something different!
